I AM MAI

Director: Erik Thien Phan

Runtime: 00:11:20

School: University of Oklahoma

I AM MAI is a psychological piece about Mai, an Asian American artist who represses parts of her identity in an attempt to shield herself from society’s judgment. She visualises the artworks she paints within her own mind space that takes the form of an art studio, but finds there’s a fractured masked figure there with her. She wakes up from her meditation and goes to see her professor in an attempt to enter her lotus painting into an art exhibition about self-identity. However, she’s encouraged by her professor to incorporate self-identity into her art, and she looks deep inside herself to find what she’s truly looking for. When she goes back into her mind, she finds it distorted, seemingly by the masked figure she sees from her first visit. She’s grabbed by a black hand and forced to relive through traumatic distortions of her memories to find herself. Mai first encounters an altered version of her U.S. Citizenship test, where she’s ridiculed and berated by the naturalization officer for not being able to speak English. She then finds herself wearing traditional attire and sits in front of a vanity mirror to beautify herself. She finds that her reflection, speaking Vietnamese, is berating her for wearing the traditional wear, stating that it doesn’t belong to her because she’s forgetting her identity. Mai protests by stating she forgot herself to fit in, but then she finds that her other reflection, speaking English, tells her she might as well just embrace being Asian, as people will never view her as American. Mai, distraught by her internal struggle, finds no other choice but to sell herself and who she is to a crowd of faceless paparazzi. It destroys her sense of self-worth, but she’s pulled back to reality by the masked figure who takes her to her final destination. She’s taken to a desolate room with only two chairs and a landline telephone. She takes a seat and answers the phone to her grandmother, who’s in the ICU on her deathbed. She attempts to converse with her grandmother, but finds she’s unable to communicate with her due to a language barrier. Mai attempts to reconcile with her by telling her she loves her, but it’s too late. The masked figure goes to Mai and reveals that she is a reflection of Mai. She tells Mai to embrace her two worlds and gives her the fractured mask, telling her that her split identity is one to be celebrated instead of repressed. Mai finds herself back in the art studio and creates a self-portrait with gold fracturing on her face, symbolizing her fractured identity.
